According to the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Akosombo Dam is currently getting more than double the amount of water in October compared to previous years.
The volume of water entering the dam is extremely high, which indicates that the overflow of water from the Akosombo Dam will persist.
Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Engineering and Operations at the VRA, warned in a radio interview on Monday (Oct 16, 2023) that if there are two days of uninterrupted rain, the dam has the potential to fail.
He described the occurrence of water influx into Akosombo Dam, which had previously been observed in 2006 and 2010.
In addition to the large amounts of water flowing from Burkina Faso, there are also water volumes originating from Togo. He mentioned that the current trend was similar to the trend observed in 2010.
According to him, the VRA is currently monitoring the amount of water coming in, and if there are any unforeseen increases in flow, then the overflow will persist.
