Lawyer Akoto Ampaw, who provided legal representation for President Akufo-Addo during the 2020 election petition, has reportedly passed away.

According to reports, he passed away at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) on the early morning of Friday, October 20. Based on the information we have, the attorney’s health has been poor since the start of 2023.The sources mentioned that the grieving family is anticipated to release a statement to the press at a later time.

Lawyer Akoto Ampaw, who passed away, was among those who expressed disapproval of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. He firmly stated back then that the proposed legislation aims to unjustifiably make sympathy and support for the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana a criminal offense.

Mr. Akoto Ampaw also mentioned that the bill restricts the freedom of citizens to discuss LGBTQ topics, which he sees as a violation of the principles set forth in the 1992 Constitution.

Ampaw, who is commonly referred to as ‘Che Che’ since his time as a student at the University of Ghana, was a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal group involved in the 2013 Electoral Petition. His impressive legal career was highlighted by his participation in the New Patriotic Party’s legal team during the Electoral Petition of 2013.

In addition to his extensive knowledge and experience in the field of law, Mr. Ampaw was a highly esteemed associate at Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co., the renowned legal firm connected with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Ampaw was expected to be appointed as the Special Prosecutor after the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill was approved.

He completed his LL.B. degree in 1973 from the University of Ghana and obtained his B.L. degree from the Ghana School of Law in 1993. He specialized in areas such as Commercial Law, Company Law, Industrial Law, and Litigation, among various other fields.
