He has spent several years in the Ghanaian music scene, contributing to the entertainment not only in Ghana but also reaching a broader audience. As he frequently emphasizes, “I am an entertainer.” Rapper Medikal, a member of the Arab Money Gang group, has unveiled his latest studio album, titled “Planning and Plotting.”

For a while, it felt like the album might never arrive, as he repeatedly mentioned its impending release without a substantial rollout. It wasn’t until I heard him confirm on Twitter Space that the album would be released on October 7, 2023.

I had the privilege of attending the Private Album Listening event at the Sunken Gardens, where I couldn’t help but think, “Medikal has truly outdone himself with this album.” Upon entering the venue, a banner with the tracklist caught my eye, and I was particularly excited about the tracks featuring Ofori Amponsah and Sherifa Gunu, as they promised to be intriguing tunes.

As I took my seat, I found a brochure on the table that provided insights into Medikal’s biography, a selection of his hit songs, and the awards and achievements he’s earned throughout his career. It was heartening to witness the support of numerous celebrities who gathered to back the Sowutuom artist.

Medikal eventually released the album on October 13, 2023. It’s a remarkable album. Prior to its release, he had already dropped a track featuring Nigeria’s Mayorkun called “Balenciaga,” which is a highly danceable record, perfect for any party.

With all the buzz surrounding the album, let’s dive into “Planning and Plotting” track by track:

Sowutuom: Rather than rapping about his own experiences as a Sowutuom native, Medikal created an inspirational anthem for the people of Sowutuom, urging them to remain vigilant and unafraid of their adversaries. He emphasizes the importance of fearing the person behind the gun rather than the gun itself.

Cartel: Medikal takes us to the UK with a change in accent and profound lyrics. He metaphorically compares his current status to that of notorious figures like Pablo Escobar and El Chapo, creating a compelling drill tune.

Scary (Ehu): This is another drill track that seems more focused on vibing to the catchy beat rather than conveying a specific message. Medikal mentions that his lifestyle is scary, and he highlights the non-conformity of “street” boys.

We Made It (feat. Sarkodie): Medikal and Sarkodie deliver a masterpiece in this track, with Medikal delivering powerful verses and Sarkodie offering valuable advice to up-and-coming artists, drawing from his own experiences. This track stands out as one of the album’s highlights.

Provider: Medikal and Tom D’Frick give hope to struggling individuals trying to make ends meet. Medikal offers motivational lyrics while Tom D’Frick takes the stage to share his personal journey.

Convo (feat. Jay Bahd and Headie One): This track doesn’t have a specific message, but it’s a catchy tune that will get you dancing to the Asakaa beat.

Balenciaga (feat. Mayorkun): A highly danceable track, “Balenciaga” features smooth verses from Medikal and a wonderful contribution from Mayorkun.

Provider (feat. Ofori Amponsah): “Provider” has a nostalgic feel and centres around the theme of love. Ofori Amponsah’s presence adds a timeless touch to the song.

My Way (feat. Shatta Wale): This collaboration between Medikal and Shatta Wale is reminiscent of “Balenciaga,” designed to get listeners on their feet and dancing. Shatta Wale delivers a killer verse.

Big Man Tin: This track combines funky vibes with Amapiano elements, offering a fun, carefree vibe. Medikal’s goal, as he mentioned in an interview, is for listeners to have a good time with the album.

Enjoy (feat. Sherifa Gunu): Medikal reflects on his life before and after fame, emphasizing his desire to simply enjoy life. Sherifa Gunu contributes with a brief yet engaging verse.

Slow Motion, Road Clear, and Sokoo: These songs share a similar danceable sound, with Medikal infusing humor into his lyrics, creating a distinctive and enjoyable style.

While the album may not carry a specific message, it undeniably boasts some fantastic songs. It is my hope that the album achieves the success Medikal envisioned and more. Special recognition goes to the producers and sound engineers, including A-Town, Chensee Beatz, Peewizle, and the others who have contributed to the album’s solidity.

Medikal has fulfilled his part, and now it’s up to us, as fans and supporters of Ghanaian music, to do our part by streaming and sharing the album to foster a thriving industry for
