The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Quartey, has admitted that referees in Ghanaian football are unlikely to achieve perfection, despite ongoing calls for improvements in officiating standards.

His comments come in the wake of heavy criticism leveled against Ghanaian referee Maxwell Hanson, who faced scrutiny for several errors during the Ghana  Premier League match between Accra Lions and Dreams FC on Matchday 16.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Quartey explained that the Referees Assessment Committee evaluates match officials using a framework that differs significantly from the perspectives of journalists and fans.

“For the past season I think they are performing well but they need to do better than what they are doing. I will always say that from the technical point of view, we assess referees on different parameters.”

He further emphasized that while mistakes are inevitable, the GFA remains committed to improving officiating standards in the league.

“Refereeing is not a perfect job . You can never be perfect but you strive to improve on your performance every time that you are given the opportunity to officiate in a game.”

The second round of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League resumes on the weekend of January 25, promising thrilling fixtures across various venues. Clubs are gearing up for intense battles as they compete for supremacy and aim to claim the coveted league title. High-quality officiating is anticipated to ensure fair play throughout the second round of matches.
