According to a press statement released by the Ghana Network of Persons Living with HIV (NAB+ Ghana). There is currently a shortage of two vital antiretroviral medications, Abacavir and Lamivudine in the country. Interestingly, these drugs arrived at the Harbour since July but are being held until AU tax, ECOWAS tax and COVID-19 tax are paid before they can be accessed.
These drugs were purchased with donor funds and incurred no cost to the country and as such, should not attract tax. However, authorities are insisting on tax payments before releasing these essential medications.
NAB+ Ghana are appealing to the government to waive the taxes, to allow for the prompt distribution of these life-saving drugs to those in need.
Nab+ Ghana also stated in their letter that the incident has led to some of the members switching drugs. Drugs such as TENOFIVIR LAMIVUDINE DOLUTEGRAVIR (TLD). This has created problems like kidney and liver dysfunctions. The letter also stated that some persons are also taking Abacavir/Lamivudine for kids. Hence, instead of two pills they are now taking 4-5 pills per dosage which may cause complications in the future.
