Kaywa, the CEO of the Highly Spiritual record label and a well-known music producer, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the way Nigerians have dominated the Ghanaian-originated highlife music genre.
In an interview with Amelley Djosu on Joy Prime`s Celeb Biz, Kaywa attributed this issue to the behavior of certain Ghanaians. He held the view that Ghanaians have less self-assurance in comparison to Nigerians.
Nigerians and Ghanaians have a mutual admiration for each other’s uniqueness. Just as Nigerians are amazed by Ghanaians, Ghanaians also find Nigerians fascinating. We simply don’t have faith in our own “wow,” whereas they truly have faith in their own “wow.” He said that we lack self-belief while emphasizing that they have confidence in themselves.
Nigerians are hailing highlife music legends, whereas Ghana lacks a prominent highlife king, despite the fact that highlife originated from Ghana.
Kaywa states that Ghana previously had a strong presence in the Nigerian music industry, yet Nigerian musicians persisted in creating music. Instead, they continued with determination until they managed to change the course of the story by advocating for the “Ghana must go” plan.
Ghana had a dominant presence in the Nigerian industry, causing Nigerians to express distress over their lack of job opportunities. This was due to the belief that Ghanaians were perceived as more hardworking, resulting in them securing employment over Nigerians in similar job searches. They expressed disapproval of this narrative, stating that it is not favorable for our situation. He clarified that before making any changes, Ghana’s situation must be resolved.
Although he is from Ghana, the music producer expressed his appreciation for Nigerians who, according to him, appreciate their work even when faced with opposition.
Kaywa dismissed claims made by certain Ghanaians that local musicians were not creating quality music and producing good music videos. He pointed out that there was a period when Nigerians were imitating Ghanaian movies and music videos.
He stressed the point that Ghanaians have become less focused, resulting in the Nigerian music scene surpassing that of Ghana.
Given this situation, the music producer recommended that Ghanaians should pay greater attention to their own needs and priorities.
