Three ex-prisoners have been given a six-month sentence of intense manual work by the Agona Nsaba Magistrate’s Court for stealing cassava worth GHC1,800. According to reports, the thief stole the agricultural items from the farm owned by Emmanuel Fenyn, a farmer residing in Agona Nyakrom.

Ernest Saakwa (35), Emmanuel Amoaning (33), and Yaw Oboom (32), who were responsible for the crime, admitted to being involved in a plot and stealing. The court ruled that the punishments for both crimes would be served at the same time. This was not the first time the three individuals had encountered the law.

Prior to this event, they had been sentenced to three months in prison for stealing plantains, as decreed by the identical court. Detective Chief Inspector Aglagoh Lawson, who served as the prosecutor, presented the case to Magistrate Victor Kusi during the proceedings. Lawson clarified that the person who made the complaint was the owner of a cassava farm located in Apumuso, close to Nyakrom.

The theft was reported on November 5, 2023. Lawson stated that on that particular Sunday, the criminals illegally gathered cassava from the complainant’s farm, which had a value of GHC1,800.00. An observant bystander saw what they were doing and quickly let the farmer know. When the farmer arrived, he found out that the culprits had mysteriously disappeared.

Further examinations and apprehensions disclosed that the group had confessed to removing the cassava from the ground and vending it to a mysterious person in Agona Swedru for the previously mentioned sum of money. After conducting an investigation, they were officially charged with a crime, resulting in their guilt being established and receiving a punishment.

The response to the punishment given to the former prisoners has generated varying opinions among Ghanaians on social media. Some people believe that the sentence is too severe and suggest that the convicts may have committed the crime out of desperation due to lack of food.

However, some individuals claim that their reputation as infamous criminals stems from their past behavior.
